Overcoming depression

Depression means different things to different people. For some people, they mean a persistent low mood - often in reaction to a crisis or adjustment or low self-esteem. For others, depression can become more pronounced producing symptoms such as:

  • Constant low mood or sadness
  • A profound sense of worthlessness, helpless and/or guilt
  • Disturbed sleep patterns
  • Diminished interest and pleasure in life
  • Fatigue
  • Restlessness
  • Poor concentration
  • Lack of motivation
  • Difficulty in making decisions
  • Sometimes a feeling that life is not worth living and thoughts of wanting to die

The causes of depression are complex and different for each individual. Inevitably, when we are depressed, we see life through a negative filter. Such negative thinking fuels the depression. Often we withdraw from activities and interactions with others that might improve our mood. Or we might start to push ourselves far too hard and tire ourselves out all the more. Either way, negative patterns of thought and action perpetuate the depression.

Depression is thought to be an adaptation of one of the functions of the primitive brain. Our ancestors would have instinctively known to withdrawn and conserve energy at times of threat or when resource were scarce. If we interpret life as being too difficult to manage or if we struggle with thoughts of self doubt, then our primitive brain may lead us to withdraw. It may produce even more worry thoughts and constantly trouble us to find immediate relief to our distress.

How hypnotherapy can help

Hypnotherapy works to break the cycle, promoting sleep, positive/realistic thoughts and actions. Hypnotherapy works to increase the production of neurotransmitters such as Serotonin (in a similar fashion to how antidepressants help) that are necessary to promote mentally healthy behaviour.

How many treatments?

Following an initial consultation, between 6-10 weekly treatments are required depending on the nature of your current condition.
