Overcoming IBS

IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) is a common and often chronic problem that can affect the whole digestive system.

Symptoms can include:

  • Abdominal pain or cramps
  • Bloating
  • Change in bowel movements – diarrhoea, constipation or both

Other less common symptoms include:

  • Excess wind and gas
  • Feeling like you haven’t fully emptied your bowels
  • Occasional other symptoms like nausea, tiredness, muscle, back or joint pain

While the causes of IBS are not fully understood, stress and anxiety are thought to be significant contributory factors, though opinions within the medical community vary greatly. Some foods are thought to be triggers. In particular:

  • Wheat Products
  • Dairy Products
  • Onions
  • Caffeine-containing drinks like tea, coffee, and cola
  • Chocolate

Some authorities think that an episode of gastroenteritis can be a trigger.

How many treatments?

Following an initial consultation, and subject to any diagnosis by your GP, between 4-6 treatments are required to treat IBS.
